Skin Pigmentation - Age Related Changes
What is skin pigmentation and how do you deal with these
age-related changes?
Most of us notice a change in the pigmentation of
our skin as we age. The most common signs we see are called age spots, liver
spots and sun spots. These skin pigmentation spots are brown in color and
usually develop in older people, usually by their 40s, but have been known to
affect younger people as well. Although these spots are normal age-related
changes, this change in skin pigmentation affects appearance and treatment is
usually sought. These age spots, as they are commonly known, develop on the face,
hands and neck and are actually not actually caused by age, but by the
ultraviolet rays of our sun. With continuous and significant unprotected
exposure, ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin and cause the formation of darker

Normal age spots are completely harmless to health and are not a symptom of
skin cancer. However, for most of us, these are blemishes that we want to get
rid of and there are several treatment options.
Skin pigmentation treatments:
Retinoid Treatment: This usually comes in the form
of a cream that is applied topically to imperfections in the skin's
pigmentation. Retinoid is a prescription drug that helps promote healthier skin
and fade age spots. Retinoid contains antioxidant properties that are good for
skin cell defense. Keep in mind that the retinoid will dry out the skin during
the treatment period. An over-the-counter option called retinol is also an
option you might consider.
Creams or lotions for age spots: These products
usually work by lightening sun spots. The result can be slow as it involves a
gradual discoloration of the skin pigmentation of the underlying skin. The
active ingredients in these products include hydroquinone along with vitamins A
and C to enhance rejuvenation and promote healthier skin.
Chemical Peels – The acidic properties of chemical
peels have proven to be an effective way to remove sunspots. Although this
method takes a little longer because the peels are done in stages, the desired
complexion is eventually achieved.
Laser Treatments: This is the most extreme option
to consider. These treatments are often performed in combination with other
anti-aging treatments. The intense heat of the laser beam removes blemishes and
gives the skin a more youthful appearance. However, these treatments involve
multip
le steps and therefore multiple visits to the doctor and can be quite expensive.
